The Baby Rules or Natural Conception and Pregnancy

The Baby Rules: The Insider's Guide to Raising Your Parents

Author: Schaefer Wilson Jami

With its lighthearted approach out of the mouths of babes (literally!), this book offers an alternative to the many parenting tomes that are impossible for sleep-deprived readers to get through. As new mothers, the authors read many parenting books and were dismayed at the amount of advice that was not only intimidating, but downright dangerous. It became their mission to compile a book of easily accessible tips for new parents and caregivers with baby's safety as a priority.

Organized into categories not months (since no baby develops at the same rate, making nervous parents even more anxious!) topics include: the birth, diapering, breastfeeding, bottle-feeding and solids, burping, bath time, bedtime, walking, teething, taking care of parents, emotional development, general safety, kitchen safety, vaccines and playground safety.

Teaching the Restless or Body Fascism

Teaching the Restless: One School's Remarkable no-Ritalin Approach to Helping Children Learn and Succeed

Author: Chris Mercogliano

We've all read the stories about medicating hyperactive (ADHD) kids. The controversy shows no signs of ending, as parents and doctors debate the merits of diagnosing and medicating children at younger and younger ages. Chris Mercogliano has a strong opinion on the matter, and he enters the debate as an educator. In Teaching the Restless, Mercogliano issues an urgent call for a shift in how our society perceives hyperactive children—away from theories of faulty brain chemistry and toward an understanding of children's lives.

Mercogliano codirects the Albany Free School in Albany, New York. There, he and his faculty have developed numerous ways to help hyperactive children relax, focus, modulate emotional expression, make responsible choices, and forge lasting friendships—all prerequisites for learning—without assigning pathological labels to the children or resorting to the use of biopsychiatric drugs.

Teaching the Restless profiles a handful of Free School students, six boys and three girls. All were either labeled and drugged in their previous schools, or would have been had they not thrown in their lot with the Free School. While in Mercogliano's mind there is no such thing as a "typical" child, these nine kids represent the legions of children across the country—estimates currently run as high as 6 million—that have been diagnosed with learning and behavioral disorders and prescribed corresponding drugs.

Speaking both to parents who worry that their kids cannot attend classes without drugs and to educators who wonder how to best teach these hyperactive kids, Teaching the Restless should bring new hope into anovercharged debate.

"TEACHING THE RESTLESS is a very important book for our time. That we continue to prescribe drugs to our children in such massive numbers is appalling. There are no historical precendents for a society perpetrating such a travesty on its offspring. Chris Mercogliano deserves a medal for his courage and insight, as well as his years of hard work on behalf of America's children."

—Joseph Chilton Pearce, author of MAGICAL CHILD

"Take a ride with master teacher Chris Mercogliano as he writes his way straight into your heart. This powerful tale reflects his work as a master educator and writer and gives us an up-close look at what is possible for America's school children when we choose not to drug them into silence. The Albany Free School is a hermitage for children, a model to the nation of how a school environment built on love, honor, respect, and responsibility can effect profound changes in kids' lives."

—Yehudah Fine, family therapist and author of TIMES SQUARE RABBI: FINDING THE HOPE IN LOST KIDS' LIVES

"TEACHING THE RESTLESS is a finely crafted moral commentary on a society that would rather "tranquilize our children than create a more tranquil world for them to grow up in." Chris Mercogliano is a gifted writer as well as a superb observer of children's lives. Here, he offers a rich blend of insights and observations based on his own extensive teaching experience. His stories of real kids struggling against the cultural constraints on their lives, including inappropriate labeling and drugging, are deeply moving and convincing."

—Ron Miller, executive editor, Paths of Learning magazine, educational historian, author of WHAT ARE SCHOOLS FOR?

"God bless Chris Mercogliano. He has turned his lifelong commitment to the creation of free learning communities for children and families toward a passionate defense against the oppression of children by psychiatry and the schools. May his longstanding drug-free school zone in Albany extend throughout our country and the world."

—John Breeding, clinical psychologist, author of THE WILDEST COLTS MAKE THE BEST HORSES

"A wonderful contribution to the growing literature on the sad practice of labeling and drugging America's "free spirits." Chris Mercogliano sees past the scientific jargon and deficit-ridden orientation of the ADD/ADHD paradigm, and reveals with great humanistic sensibility the passionate worlds of active kids who don't fit into the tight little boxes of most American classrooms."

—Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., author of THE MYTH OF THE A.D.D. CHILD

Publishers Weekly

Mercogliano (Making It Up As We Go Along) has 30 years of experience in a "privately funded, freedom-based inner-city" alternative school for children ages two to 14 in Albany, N.Y. Half of the 50 students have had behavioral problems in their previous schools, for which medications such as Ritalin have been prescribed or recommended. The Free School doesn't use drugs, asserting that every child is unique, and that the school must be run as a true community with the emotional health not the test scores of each child paramount. At the Free School, children choose what they want to learn and where in the school to spend their time. Freedom works: "kids learn faster and more easily when the motivation comes from inside them [and] behave better when they are expected to be responsible for themselves and for each other." This is especially true for children with a history of oppositional behavior. When a child disrupts a class or disrespects another student, anyone in the school community can convene a "Council Meeting" of the entire school to handle the problem. While teachers, parents and professionals work surreptitiously to address more fundamental problems e.g., absent parents, harsh disciplinary styles at home, etc. the school community teaches children that behavior has very real consequences. This laid-back approach to academics, where teachers wait for the right "mental weather" rather than push children to read or do math before they're ready, may be hard for some parents to accept, but Mercogliano makes a strong case against medicating these children into submission. (Jan.) Forecast: While Mercogliano is describing experiences at one particular school, parents all over will find his critique of contemporary education provocative. Beacon plans a national publicity campaign and ads in education media. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

This is Mercogliano's second book about the Albany Free School, a 50-student, independent, inner-city school for children ages two through 14 where he has taught for 30 years and been codirector since 1985. While his first book, Making It Up As We Go Along, examined the history and teaching style of the school, this book applies its core values to the 50 percent of the school's enrollment who have either used Ritalin or other behavioral medication in the past or who were slated to do so in a previous school. Mercogliano contends that children labeled as having ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) do not necessarily have organic brain abnormalities and need not be treated with drug therapy. He makes his case persuasively in a readable, anecdotal recounting of the academic year as observed through nine students. The result is an encouraging success story that demonstrates an alternative to the ever-growing use of drugs for ever-younger children and calls into question the basis for the diagnostic labeling and use of biopsychiatric pharmaceuticals in the classroom. Body Fascism: Salvation in the Technology of Physical Fitness

Author: Brian Pronger

In the last three decades of the twentieth century, the physically fit body became the ideal of modern western societies. Images of lean, sculpted men and women dominate the cultural landscape and are now ubiquitous on billboards, in magazines, film, television, and video. Science and popular culture are profoundly mixed in the contemporary scene, and have lead to a host of exercising and dieting technologies that will make actual bodies fit the taught, muscular ideal. Many people desire this body and the attractiveness, health, longevity, and personal security that it represents. But, as Brian Pronger argues, this approach transforms more than the body's functions and contours; it diminishes its transcendent power, compelling it conform to a profoundly limited imagination of what the body can do.

Calling upon an impressive array of philosophers and other writers who have been critical of modern techno-scientific approaches to life, Pronger pries open the texts that form the technology of physical fitness in order to consider what they try to produce. Body Fascism views technology not simply as a tool for other projects, but as a project itself, producing its own realities that Pronger argues are ultimately nihilistic. Indeed, he says there are disquieting parallels between what technology has done to the environment and what it is doing to the body. Exploring fascinating intersections between postmodern Western and Zen approaches to life, he develops a theory of the body and of science and technology that shows how the body's energy is vulnerable to insidious forms of exploitation as well as harbouring the potential for transcendence. The sheer scope of this book makeit unique in the discipline and it will be of great interest not only to scholars of the body, society, science and technology, but also to those who are personally drawn to modern technologies of physical fitness.

Virginia Galloway

This is a concise, informative exploration of the mental illness crisis in America. The author provides the startling facts of our situation as an impetus for change, then catalogues the necessary steps to change. The aim of the book is simply to answer ""Why?"" Why do our mental illness problems exist? Why does the established system not work? Why has the crisis gotten worse, instead of better? What can we do? The book is needed because the current situation is depraved, inhumane, and not functional. The book answers these questions and offers a practical outline for change. The book is a valuable resource for mental health workers and the families of the mentally ill. The book is informative and pedagogic for anyone endowed with the power to invoke change. The author is learned about the state of America's mental illness crisis and has the clarity of vision and acumen to illustrate a solution. The illustrations are sufficient, but more would be useful. The references are expansive, almost overwhelming, yet necessary for a complete understanding of the gravity of the mental illness crisis. The table of contents is adequate and the index is superb. The book is attractive. The appendix detailing the magnitude of deinstitutionalization state by state is provocative, This is a palpable exploration of America's mental illness crisis. It humanely describes the privations of our mentally ill and methodically explores the economic, ideological, and legal reasons for such a state. The provided solution to the crisis is viable and informative. This book will provide mental health workers and the families of the mentally ill with insightful knowledge and has the potential to be acatalyst for change, if read by policymakers.

Kirkus Reviews

The crisis, simply put, is that 2.2 million of the estimated 5.6 million Americans with serious mental illness are not being treated. Instead, these "walking time bombs" are often homeless in the community or incarcerated in prisons. Torrey, a clinical research psychiatrist, explores how this situation came to be and offers some radical proposals for remedying it.

Torrey ("Nowhere To Go", 1988; "Freudian Fraud", 1992, etc.) notes that for the majority of people with severe mental disorders treatments to effectively control their symptoms are already available, and with research, better ones would surely be found. To that end, he urges formation of a National Brain Research Institute. Meanwhile, however, Torrey sees much that can be done to provide humane and cost-effective services for the severely mentally ill. With numerous anecdotes and impressive statistics, he builds a dismaying picture of society's failure to care for the mentally ill. He then argues for major ideological, economic, and legal changes, as well as a change in how we think about serious mental illnesses. Too often they are seen as occupying one end of the spectrum of mental health, linked to social reform and liberal causes and thus highly politicized. Torrey asserts that when serious mental illnesses are properly viewed as neurological disorders of the brain, research funding, treatment resources, and professional expertise can be more readily obtained. To eliminate cost-shifting between levels of government, which he sees as the primary cause of the present situation, he would make the states responsible for providing services and accountable for treatment outcomes, with the federal government providing block grants. While these proposals may arouse polite debate, the legal remedies he calls for—changing the laws to permit involuntary treatment, including involuntary commitment to hospitals—raise some very troubling images and are likely to elicit loud objections.

Controversial ideas, forcefully presented.

Sundial or Melatonin in Psychiatric and Neoplastic Disorders

Sundial: Theoretical Relationship between Psychological Type, Talent, and Disease

Author: Barbara E Bryden

Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychiatrist, presented the theory of psychological types to the world not long after the First World War. Almost a century later, scientific research supports this theory, showing the connection between psychological type, talent and health. With this historical perspective of contemporary medicine and psychology, the author makes the case that cognition and behavior associated with personality type relates to certain kinds of diseases. Once this relationship is understood, an individual can best determine a course for prevention and health management. This book is a fascinating read for those interested in the mind-body connection.

Muscletown USA or Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers

Muscletown USA: Bob Hoffman and the Manly Culture of York Barbell

Author: John D Fair

From the 1930s to the 1980s, the capital of weightlifting in America was York, Pennsylvania, the home of the York Barbell Company. Bob Hoffman, the founder of York Barbell, propagated an ideology of success for Americans seeking physical improvement. Often called the "Father of World Weightlifting," Hoffman was a pioneer in marketing barbells and health foods. He popularized weight training and inaugurated a golden age of American weightlifting. Muscletown USA--part biography, part business history, and part sports history--chronicles how Hoffman made York the mecca of manly culture for millions of followers worldwide.Hoffman created his so-called muscle empire out of an oil-burner business that he started in the early 1920s. Within a decade, his passion for sport exceeded his need to produce oil burners and by the outset of the Depression he began manufacturing barbells at the factory. He soon discovered a willing public of aspiring weightlifters like himself who would buy not only barbells but also health and fitness products. Hoffman soon recruited a remarkable group of athletes, whom he tagged his "York Gang." He gave these men jobs in the factory, where they trained for national and international meets. Gradually, Hoffman emerged as one of the most prominent muscle peddlers in America, using his fame and fortune to promote competitive weightlifting, bodybuilding, and powerlifting. Muscletown USA reveals other innovations in which Hoffman played a major role, including weight training for athletes, health foods, bottled spring water, isometrics, and women's weightlifting. Even anabolic steroids, first used by weightlifters in the early 1960s, were a direct outgrowth of thefitness culture spawned by Hoffman.Meticulously researched and engagingly written, Fair's book will appeal to a wide range of readers, including anyone fascinated by American sports history and the iron game.

John D. Fair is professor of history and chair of the Department of History and Geography at Georgia College & State University in Milledgville, Georgia. He is the author of two books on modern British history. He has competed in more than fifty Olympic and powerlifting meets, coached several teams, taught weight-training classes, staged meets, been a national referee, served on the national weightlifting committee, and even judged a Mr. America contest.

Booknews

A cultural history of the golden age of weightlifting, a phenomenon largely created by Bob Hoffman (1897-1985), whose promotion of a remarkable group of weightlifters known as the York gang sparked an American fascination with the sport that lasted well into the 1960s. The author focuses on the gender constructs surrounding weightlifting during that era and how the sport contributed to traditional constructs of masculinity. Excellent b&w illustrations of the era's finest athletes, including John Grimek's classic Grecian pillar pose<- ->"the greatest muscle picture ever shown." Annotation c. Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers: Basic Research and Pre-Clinical Applications

Author: Shaoguang Li

In this book, Dr. Li and his author team plan to emphasize why mouse models are useful in vivo systems for understanding disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies in blood cancers. The authors do not intend to cover all types of blood cancers; instead, they will focus on some major ones such as leukemias and lymphomas. However, the authors will try to cover as much as they can the cancer types and point out that many blood cancers need to be studied in mouse disease models although they are still not available at present. A major focus in the book will be to show what we can or cannot learn from mouse disease models and to also show the critical contributions of mouse models in therapeutic drug development.

Women Confront Cancer: Twenty-One Leaders Making Medical History by Choosing Alternative and Complementary Therapies

Author: Margaret J Wooddell

"An outstanding contribution to the international debate over breast cancer. Women Confront Cancer not only focuses on exciting new non-conventional treatment options, but allows outspoken women cancer patients to describe their experiences and ordeals in their own words. A landmard in the struggle for patient autonomy."
--Ralph Moss, Ph.D., author of The Cancer Industry

"Without telling us what we ought to do, these women make it clear what we can do: Remember that miracles do occur and that no one, not even orthodox medicine, has all the answers."
--Susun S. Weed, author of Breast Cancer? Breast Health!, The Wise Woman Way.

"Women Confront Cancer offers more than case stories of hope triumphing over despair, more than options, alternatives and resources. Its message about individuality, empowerment and leadership makes it must reading for every woman diagnosed with cancer. Its quiet demand for medical freedom of choice and for a patient-driven shift in oncologic policy should be heard by every professional in the cancer field. If ever there was a time for this book, it is now."
--Susan Silberstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education

Each year hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed with cancer, and more and more frequently, women are turning to alternative treatments to take control of their illnesses and their lives. Information, however, has been scarce for women navigating through conventional and unconventional medicine. Research funding continues to support traditional cancer therapies. Women Confront Cancer declares the need for new, less toxic therapies anddiagnostic procedures.

For the first time, Women Confront Cancer unites the voices of women leaders who have breast, cervical, ovarian, and other cancers. Documenting the decision process, the choices, and the dilemmas these women faced as they chose alternative and complementary cancer treatments, a powerful unity emerges, pointing the way to the future of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer by less toxic methods. Ann Frahm, the author of A Cancer Battle Plan, Susan Moss, the author of Keep Your Breasts, and Cathy Hitchcock, coauthor of Breast Cancer, are only three of the leaders who relate their personal experiences with cancer. All of the women featured in Women Confront Cancer share how and why they created treatment programs that combine the best of conventional and unconventional approaches, and how it has improved their health and their lives.

A call for patients' rights, for policy reform in cancer research, for better information about both conventional and alternative medicine, Women Confront Cancer will be both a source of inspiration for women who have cancer and an aid for them in creating their own approach to healing.

* Did you know that October is [ NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH ] and pink is the color that symbolizes breast cancer awareness?

This is a collection of different women's experienceswith conventional and alternative/complementary medicine. The purposeis to present stories and information regarding patients' experienceswith breast cancer with conventional and alternative/complementarymedicine. This is a worthy objective. The personal stories at timesseemed more emotional than objective. This book is targeted at alarge audience of patients, doctors, health professionals, andadvocates, according to the editors. The contributors interviewed thepatients and did not attach any follow-up documentation of data thatshould be available to the medical community, Medical, psychosocial, and political aspects of breast cancer care are discussed. The bestaspects of the book are the personal reflections. The women seem quitecompassionate. The main shortcoming is the misleading data onconventional medical intervention. Alternative/complementary therapiescan be presented in a positive way alongside modern, conventionalmedicine. The women's stories about their breast cancer experiencesportray conventional medicine in a very negative light. The concludingchapter attempts to analyze both aspects of breast care, but it is notenough. Women need to decide on their care with strong, accurateinformation. My fear is that women will not heed the warnings againstusing this book for medical advice. It needs added accurateresearch-based information to back up each chaptertopic.

Library Journal

A collection of profiles of women with breast and other cancers, this work stems from research funded by the National Cancer Institute to study the public's understanding of science. The selected women represent "the opinion leaders in the intersecting worlds of cancer, advocacy, the women's health movement and alternative/complementary medicine." Informal and open-ended interviews, based on a uniform series of questions, include personal experiences, how decisions were made, what role science or other factors played, advice for other women, and personal opinions on cancer research and publicly funded organizations. Written by a research biochemist (Wooddell) and a professor of anthropology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Hess), the book is informative but easy to read and even personable. Often-quoted references include Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book (LJ 6/1/95) and Susan Weed's Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way (Ash Tree, 1996). As a call for patients' rights and partnership in medical care, this work is recommended for public libraries and consumer health collections.--Virginia Lingle, Hershey Medical Ctr. Rising from the Dead or Radical Ecopsychology

Rising from the Dead: Stories of Women's Spiritual Journeys to Sobriety

Author: Patricia D Nanoff

Help bridge the gap between the non-religious recovering community and the religious community

Rising from the Dead: Stories of Women's Spiritual Journeys to Sobriety details the recovery stories of alcoholic women in long-term sobriety and the role spirituality has played in transforming their life histories into healing narratives. This powerful book guides helping professionals to an understanding of how the 12-step spirituality practiced by women in long-term sobriety has helped them through difficult life experiences and how the stories of those experiences can act as a rich resource for communities of faith.

The stories told in Rising from the Dead demonstrate the catastrophic nature of alcoholism, illustrating models of therapeutic listening and pastoral counseling that can help pastors, pastoral counselors, and chaplains working in the Christian community assist those who suffer from addiction. The book examines barriers that are specific to helping professionals and pastoral counselors, offering suggestions for the use of story in pastoral ministry and strategies for counseling. It includes practical applications for constructing a spiritual life story and suggested journal questions.

Rising from the Dead examines:

• Narrative construction
• Stories as sacred containers
• Stories from a therapeutic perspective
• Shame and guilt
• Threshold experiences
• Finding a path through Christian traditions
• God language
• Constructing a life story and a soul story
• And much more

Rising from the Dead: Sobriety Narratives and Sacramental Encounters is a comprehensive professional resource for pastors, pastoral counselors, chaplains, parish nurses, and seminary faculty teaching in the area of addiction ministry.

What People Are Saying

James B. Nelson
Repeatedly etched throughout these women's stories are the themes of new life, new community, and new visions of the sacred, and Nanoff weaves these themes into an effective demonstration of narrative counseling. Particularly compelling is her understanding of healing from shame as a deeply incarnational process grounded in spiritual community. . . . A SPLENDID RESOURCE FOR BOTH THERAPISTS AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS—and it is a joyful celebration of true resurrection in recovering women. (James B. Nelson, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities; Author, Thirst: God and the Alcoholic Experience)

Katherine van Wormer
HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN REVEALING THE POWER OF REDEMPTION AND THE JOY OF HEALING. The women's stories are compelling as well as empowering to the reader. . . . MUST READING FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE PRACTITIONERS, whether they are of the 12 Step tradition or as myself, of the harm reduction school; PASTORAL COUNSELORS WILL FIND MUCH OF VALUE HERE. Nanoff writes with conviction yet not dogmatically from the perspective of a feminist Christian theologian and clinical social worker as she takes us into the world of women who have found a 'pathway from hell to redemption.' Nanoff, through her skillful editing of interviews with women in recovery, maps the territory of their journeys so that others might follow the same path and find hope even in the most depressing of circumstances. Women battling the throes of addiction willing to embark on a spiritual journey will find many gems in this delightful volume on spiritual growth and recovery. Social work educators will find much of interest here for use in their teaching. Pastors will certainly want to keep copies on hand to share with members of the congregation dealing with issues related to alcoholism and drug use. Because the book is relevant to women's issues, counselors in women's shelters might well keep a supply on hand to share with residents who so often have a history of alcohol problems. Radical Ecopsychology: Psychology in the Service of Life

Author: Andy Fisher

Personal in its style yet radical in its vision, Radical Ecopsychology offers an original introduction to ecopsychology-an emerging field that ties the human mind to the natural world. In order for ecopsychology to be a force for social change, Andy Fisher insists it must become a more comprehensive and critical undertaking. Drawing masterfully from humanistic psychology, hermeneutics, phenomenology, radical ecology, nature writing, and critical theory, he develops a compelling account of how the human psyche still belongs to nature. This daring and innovative book proposes a psychology that will serve all life, providing a solid base not only for ecopsychological practice, but also for a critical theory of modern society.

Cuerpo limpio mente clara or Sibling Loss

Cuerpo limpio, mente clara: el programa de purificacion eficaz (Clear Body, Clear Mind)

Author: L Ron Hubbard

What keeps you from thinking clearly?

Do you sometimes feel tired or drained of energy for no apparent reason? Have you ever felt wooden or lifeless? Do you feel less alert and aware than you used to?

The truth is, our world is swimming in toxic substances that destroy life. Extensive studies show that pollutants, drugs and chemical residues remain in a person's body. These can dull the senses, cloud up thinking and even cause a wide range of illnesses. And worse, they block any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.

There is a solution. In Clear Body Clear Mind, L. Ron Hubbard details his monumental breakthroughs and the resulting Purification program the only effective program that eliminates the devastating effects of drugs and toxins. Hundreds of thousands have done this program and lived happier, more perceptive and aware lives.

Publishers Weekly

"The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress drugs and other biochemical substances," warns L. Ron Hubbard in Clear Body Clear Mind: The Effective Purification Program (originally published in 1990). Hubbard outline a detoxification program aimed at eliminating the build-up of destructive chemicals in the body (including narcotics, prescription drugs, pesticides and preservatives). The program stresses exercises, sauna visits, vitamin supplements and plenty of water and fresh vegetables. The book also includes testimony from people who've successfully completed the program. (June) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Criticas

Arguing that the body stores toxic residues that affect health and mental performance, New York Times best-selling author Hubbard proposes a detoxification program that combines balanced nutrition with exercise, daily doses of niacin, and sauna sessions to release the toxins. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

The late founder of the Church of Scientology and author of phenomenal best seller Dianetics (Bridge, 1950) created the detoxification regimen of running, saunas, natural oils, and specific vitamins and minerals that is clearly presented in this book. Included in the book are numerous testimonies from people who used this regimen to recover from substance abuse, radiation illness, Agent Orange-related diseases, and more. Still, readers should know that Hubbard's advocacy of megavitamins to detoxify the body has not been medically proven and is considered a controversial regimen by the regular medical community. Notwithstanding the footnoting (of common as well as technical terms--meant to promote accessibility but maddening to literate readers), a ``bibliography'' consisting of items available from Bridge (the official Church publisher), and a biographical note which virtually canonizes Hubbard, this title would be appropriate for large general-audience collections with subject demand in alternative therapies or Scientology.-- Judith Eannarino, George Wash ington Univ. I Have Heard You Calling in the Night or Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005

I Have Heard You Calling in the Night

Author: Thomas Healy

It seems now like a different me, the years I spent with Martin, a Doberman dog, and before he came, another me; and it is a new me now, once again, writing this. I would have been dead long ago had I continued to live the way I had before he came.

I think someone would have murdered me, given how I drank and the dives that I drank in and that I was an aggressive, angry man. I had no money and no friends. I didn’t care, I couldn’t have.

Thomas Healy was a drunk, a fighter, sometimes a writer, often unemployed, no stranger to the police. His life was going nowhere but downhill. Then one day he bought a pup—a Doberman. He called him Martin. Gradually man and dog became unshakable allies, the closest of comrades, the best of friends. They took long walks together, they vacationed together, they even went to church together.

Martin, in more ways than one, saved Thomas Healy’s life.

Written with unadulterated candor and profound love, this soulful memoir gets at the heart of the intense bond between people and dogs.

Publishers Weekly

Novelist Healy was a raging, brawling drunk until, on a whim, he adopted a Doberman pinscher puppy he named Martin. He nursed Martin through illness and wounds; Martin in turn stood guard over him while he lay passed out in fields. Their bond, and the slight but persistent duty of caring for Martin enabled Healy to very fitfully begin to recover from his alcoholism and propensity to violence and gently nudged him toward an understanding of himself and God. Healy embeds the story in a memoir of his life in the slums of Glasgow, his relationship with his parents, his conflicted attitude toward the church and his many loves, from a youthful encounter with a whore with a heart of gold to a mature affair with a boss who fired him after he makes clear that Martin is more important to him than she is. "It was not right that a man should need a dog as much as I had needed him," Healy acknowledges, but he makes no apologies that "for whatever reason, my best pal possessed four legs instead of two." In Healy's heartfelt prose, this eccentric friendship becomes the core of a moving meditation on the mysterious nature of redemption. (Oct.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Part Angela's Ashes, part A Million Little Pieces, Healy's memoir of sin and redemption through dog companionship tells a story far larger than its 208 pages would indicate. As a young man, Scotsman Healy seems headed for prison or violent death owing to his drinking and brawling. But then he meets Martin, a Doberman Pinscher pup that he pays 50 pounds for on a whim. What Healy receives in return from this extraordinary dog is invaluable. Not only does Martin help Healy regain some dignity and regard for his own life, but he also helps guide him through a series of adventures and romances. Even in death Martin helps Healy grow to be a better person. Healy sometimes brags about the women he beds, but mercifully his tale is free of explicit sex or violence. And while his is not a humorous book, it offers some amusing moments. More important, Healy's memoir manages to do what all the best books do: leave you wanting more. Recommended for all public libraries. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/06.]-Alicia Graybill, Southeast Lib. Syst., Lincoln, NB Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Glasgow-based novelist Healy makes his U.S. debut with an ode to his dog, "a gift from God, to keep me in the world."The author spent his early adult years roaming around Scotland, drinking, brawling, writing short stories, drinking, generally batching it, and, oh yes, drinking. Then, on a lark, he adopted a Doberman named Martin. This slender volume, marked by blunt, unadorned prose, is a paean to the dog whose devotion and dependence transformed his life. Healy got serious about earning money, so that he could pay Martin's veterinarian bills, and he gradually ditched the bottle. Though he wouldn't get sober until after Martin's death, Healy credits the dog with starting him on the path to sobriety: "I wanted to keep him and I could not have kept him had I continued to drink the way I had." The author and his elderly mother bonded over Martin. He began attending mass as a result of their more comfortable relationship and, over the years, gained strength from his Catholic faith. (The book takes its title from a Christian psalm.) Healy even embarked on a ten-day silent retreat at a monastery. The silence proved challenging only when he ran across a monk who used to tend bar at one of his hangouts. Dog-lovers who found Marley & Me too saccharine will welcome this darker-hued appreciation of a canine friend.
