The Road to a Healthy Heart Runs through the Kitchen

Author: Joe Piscatella

The bible used by heart patients and recommended by thousands of hospitals, The Road to a Healthy Heart is the cardiac patient's step-by-step guide to cooking and eating in the real world. Born out of Joe Piscatella's own experience of coming back from emergency bypass surgery—and his wife's determination to gather the recipes and prepare the foods that would keep her husband alive—this is a complete 10-years-in-the-making revision of the classic Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook.

With: Silver Dollar Pancakes, Grilled Steak and Onion Salad, Tex-Mex Pizza, Linguine with Clam Sauce, Warm Caramel Pears, and Apple Cranberry Crisp.

The furthest thing from a diet of deprivation, these 30 family-friendly, Mediterranean-style recipes will help you prevent, manage and perhaps even reverse heart disease, lose weight and keep it off, and enjoy the double benefit of good health and good cheer.

Publishers Weekly

Coronary bypass survivor Piscatella (Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook) champions the benefits of a Mediterranean-style diet for both preventing heart disease and promoting good health in general. The first half of his hefty book surveys all things heart related, with an emphasis on what causes heart problems and how to prevent or reverse them. Though not a physician or a Ph.D., Piscatella presents the material well, using simple graphics to stress key points, such as the fact that a New England Journal of Medicine report suggests that eating only two servings of fish per week may cut the risk of dying from heart attack in half. The latter portion of the book contains practical, family-friendly recipes prepared by Piscatella's wife, Bernie. Easy to follow, and clearly developed with kids in mind (e.g., six kinds of pizza), they include Soba Noodle Salad, Red Snapper with Creamy Parmesan Sauce, and Classic Lasagna with only 346 calories per serving. There's even a Mac and Cheese recipe, which will quell fears that maintaining a healthy heart requires kissing comfort foods good-bye. The Piscatellas not only write well and are passionate about the material, but obviously also love to eat. (Feb.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Surviving Cancer Emotionally or A Modern Herbal

Surviving Cancer Emotionally: Learning how to Heal

Author: Roger Granet

Inspiration and Information to Help You Cope With the Emotional Effects of Cancer

Cancer changes our lives–physically and emotionally. The more you understand about your psychological reactions to cancer, the more effectively you can cope. In this powerful book, Dr. Roger Granet, a psychiatrist who specializes in the emotional side effects of cancer and its treatment, draws on two decades of experience as he explains what you can expect emotionally at each phase. Here’s advice on:

  • Dealing with the diagnosis
  • Finding the coping style that’s right for you
  • Handling the many demands of treatment
  • Knowing when to ask for help–and how to find it
  • Surviving and coming to terms with a different you
  • Handling the fear of recurrence

Written with compassion and clarity, Surviving Cancer Emotionally reveals how we can cope with a devastating illness and turn it into a positive catalyst for embracing life.

"Dr. Granet provides ways to help people heal emotionally as they cope with an illness that carries great fears with it. Patients and families will find this book a helpful companion as they undertake the cancer journey with all its twists and turns."–Jimmie Holland, M.D., Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

"Dr. Granet is a caring physician with a heart and soul, and an unusual gift for telling a story. This book should be read by anybody who has cancer, or who has a loved one with cancer."–Robert Michels, M.D., University Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, Cornell University, and former Dean and Provost, CornellUniversity Medical College

Publishers Weekly

This user-friendly guide to surviving a cancer diagnosis and the ensuing treatment will be enormously helpful to patients and their intimates. A consulting psychiatrist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Granet provides a wealth of information about many types of cancers and treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants. But his central focus is the emotional toll of all aspects of the disease and the importance of seeking support from the many available resources to cope successfully. While Granet gives no credence to the theory that particular personality traits contribute to cancer, he does insist that a patient's emotional well-being improves her quality of life. In order to maintain emotional health, he recommends strategies for coping after diagnosis, and during and after treatment (one patient struggles with "the endless waiting" leading up to and following tests and treatments). He addresses the fear of recurrence and of death. Since the needs and preferences of cancer patients differ, he recommends a variety of workable techniques, based on compelling case histories, such as counseling, participation in support groups and a renewed reliance on caretaking by friends and family. He also believes that all patients benefit from acknowledging their difficult emotions rather than blurring them with alcohol or drugs; indeed, in his customarily compassionate, calm manner, readers will sense that he does not turn away from difficult feelings and fears. He does, though, advocate pain medication as an important tool when appropriate. Noting that cancer survivors often gain deeper spiritual values and emotional maturity, the author sees the possibility of strengthand grace where people often expect humiliation and dysfunction. Dancers Body Book or Autism and the God Connection

Dancers' Body Book

Author: Allegra Kent

Ballet dancers have the strongest, most beautiful, probably the most envied bodies in the world. How do they stay slender and willowy while maintaining the extraordinary energy it takes to perform night after night? Can a nondancer or an amateur attain a dancer's figure and a dancer's vitality? And keep it?

Here, in The Dancers' Body Book, the legendary ballerina Allegra Kent discloses the health, weight-watching, and relaxation secrets of some of the world's greatest ballet dancers -- from Suzanne Farrell and Fernando Bujones to Darci Kistler and Madame Alexandra Danilova. Combining them with two well-balanced diets -- one to lose weight by and one to live by -- and an exercise regimen that can be tailored to the individual, she provides a fabulous fitness program for everyone who longs to be slimmer, healthier, and more energetic.

Fourteen varied menus incorporate delicious recipes from the dancers themselves (such as Jacques D'Amboise's Wonderful Dinner Salad and Dierdre Carberry's Almond Meringue Kisses), along with calorie guides and advice on how to create additional menus using your own favorite dishes. Helpful discussions on sports and exercise systems -- ranging from jogging and swimming to the sophisticated "Pilates" workout -- are also included, and in a special chapter entitled "A Healthy Outlook," the dancers talk candidly on such issues as smoking, anorexia, vitamins, doctors, massage, junk foods, fad diets, and injuries.

Dancers take meticulous care of all their equipment because training and performance depend on it. Of course, the most essential piece of equipment, the body, needs the most care of all, and that is what this book is about: howto take care of the world's greatest machine.

Allegra Kent joined the New York City Ballet at the age of fifteen and was a principal dancer with the company for thirty years, during which time she created a number of starring roles in ballets by Balanchine and Robbins. The mother of two daughters and a son, she is also the author of Allegra Kent's Water Beauty Book.

Autism and the God Connection: Redefining the Autistic Experience Through Extraordinary Accounts of Spiritual Giftedness

Author: William Stillman

A powerful, groundbreaking new book for anyone touched by autism!

Autism has captured the world's attention as the neurological disorder that impacts one out of every 166 children-ten times higher than just ten years ago. Despite the international scrambling of scientists to provide an explanation, there remains no single known cause for the rise in autism. Autism and the God Connection is the first book of its kind to view autism through a spiritual prism, unlocking its hidden meaning. Through countless, compelling interviews William Stillman documents extraordinary examples of spiritual giftedness.

Autism and the God Connection boldly challenges our traditionally held beliefs about people with disabilities. Readers looking for hope, inspiration and a deeper understanding of their loved ones will appreciate the affirming anecdotes of ordinary families.

Booklist

In certain cultures, people with illnesses affecting the ability to communicate are thought to be visited by spirits. The sufferer may be regarded as a messenger for a deity, an anointed one to be revered and honored. Sadly, Western culture often relegates those diagnosed with autism and related disorders to the ranks of the incurably crippled. Worse, almost everyone, from family members to friends to primary caregivers, too easily writes off the intelligence of a person who has difficulty speaking. So written off, the sufferer is discounted and ignored. Stillman, who has Asperger's syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, speaks out on behalf of the wisdom of considering people with autism as not just intelligent but also highly spiritual. Drawing on testimony from dozens of parents, teachers, and autistic individuals, he builds a solid case in favor of not just his mantra'always presume intelligence'but also of thinking that God's most challenged people possess a deep, abiding spirituality.

Library Journal

A writer with Asperger's syndrome, a mild version of autism, Stillman (Demystifying the Autistic Experience: A Humanistic Introduction for Parents, Caregivers, and Educators) treads a highly sensitive subject: the connection between autism and faith in God. Many parents of autistic children have taken a similar slant (see Lynne M. Hamilton's Facing Autism: Giving Parents Reasons for Hope and Guidance for Help and Catherine Maurice's Let Me Hear Your Voice: A Family's Triumph over Autism). Stillman tries to shed light on the condition by tying together a wide variety of personal narratives (the best part of the book) with a broader spiritual message. While the conclusions might provide comfort for some, many, if not most, will find them insulting. Stillman cites the ability of autistics to connect better with animals, to offer "profound" messages when communicating, and to exhibit a sense of telepathy with those around them before concluding that people with autism are "messengers of God." Such a simplistic view contributes very little toward understanding autism. This book has extremely limited appeal and is not recommended for libraries.-Corey Seeman, Kresge Business Administration Lib., Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

What People Are Saying

Larry Dossey
"Autism and the God Connection is a formidable challenge to simplistic explanations of autism. The clinical stories in this book raise significant questions about the nature of consciousness and its relationship to the brain. This book is about more than neurological issues; it is about our nature, our origin and destiny---in short, our connection with the Absolute, however named."
M.D., author of The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things

Gary Zukav
"Everyone who seeks a more compassionate and wise life will benefit from this wonderful, insightful, and beautiful book. It is a very short step from understanding autism and the God connection to understanding you and the God Connection."

Jeffrey A. Naser
"This book is a must read, whether you love someone with an autistic-spectrum disorder, or work in the field. William Stillman describes a parallel process of discovering his own spirituality, while exploring the heightened spiritual connectedness of those he works with. The result provides a deep sense of hope and understanding that I've not experienced with other books on autistic-spectrum disorders."

"Autism and the God Connection is a compelling, powerful, and thought provoking book. The Fibromyalgia Solution: A Breakthrough Approach to Heal Your Body and Take Back Your Life

Author: David Dryland

Fibromyalgia is a common and chronic medical disorder
characterized by widespread pain and often coupled
with other symptoms such as fatigue, disturbed sleep,
chronic headaches, and other ailments. Recent research
shows that the disorder is directly related to decreased
levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The solution,
renowned rheumatologist Dr. David Dryland argues, is
to regulate levels of dopamine in the body through an
"off-label protocol" using the FDA-approved medications
Mirapex and Requip, which help mute pain
signals traveling from the body to the brain. This vital
and necessary book will also show readers how to:
- develop a protocol to successfully treat fibromyalgia
- identify what causes the disease and its debilitating
flare-ups
- determine which symptoms can be attributed to
fibromyalgia and which cannot
- use non-drug treatments for relieving the painful
symptoms of the disease
- and more.

Quantum Healing or Everyones Guide to Cancer Therapy

Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine

Author: Deepak Chopra

Here is an extraordinary new approach to healing by an extraordinary physician-writer -- a book filled with the mystery, wonder, and hope of people who have experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from cancer and other serious illnesses.

Dr. Deepak Chopra, a respected New England endocrinologist, began his search for answers when he saw patients in his own practice who completely recovered after being given only a few months to live. In the mid-1980's he returned to his native India to explore Aruyveda, humanities most ancient healing tradition. Now he has brought together the current research of Wetern medicine, neuoscience, and physics with the insights of Ayurvedic theory to show that the human body is controlled by a "network of intelligence" grounded in quantum reality. Not a superficial psychological state, this intelligence lies deep enough to change the basic pattenrs that design our physiology -- with the potential to defeat cancer, heart disease, and even aging itself. in this inspiring and pioneering work, Dr. Chopra offers us both a fascinating intellectual journey and a deeply moving chronicle of hope and healing.

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations

Author: Olivia H Miller

From the author of the best-selling Yoga Deck comes Essential Yoga -- the only hatha yoga book to offer this many poses (over 100), this many illustrations (over 180), and this many suggested sequences (over 50). Practical and interactive, it focuses on the poses themselves, providing clear, concise instructions and detailed illustrations for each, all in a lay-flat format that's easy to refer to during yoga practice. It also includes six classic moving meditations (such as Sun Salutation and Camel Vinyasa), 10 beginner-to-advanced sessions, and 48 mini-sequences designed to build strength for specific activities or alleviate health problems. Essential Yoga combines physical poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas), and meditations (dhyanas) into a simple and complete reference guide for yoga practitioners of all levels. Along the way, author Olivia Miller provides guidance on proper technique and alignment; modifications for beginners or those with knee, neck, or back pain; suggestions for preventing injury; and ways to keep a regular practice interesting and active. For beginners as much as experts looking for one complete book that has it all, Essential Yoga is it.

Publishers Weekly

One of the simplest yet most comprehensive yoga books to be published in recent memory, Miller's work could become a classic. Using elegant, gentle prose and graceful line drawings to illustrate poses, the book serves as an excellent introduction for those unfamiliar with or just getting used to breathing in downward facing dog position. Miller, who has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and writes for Yoga Journal and other publications, takes a three-pronged approach to teaching yoga, focusing on the equally important components of breathing, poses and meditation. She doesn't spend much time on the history and origins of yoga, and quickly moves to technique. Focusing on hatha yoga, Miller teaches readers breathing exercises and how to warm up, and then proceeds to standing, seated, prone, supine and inverted poses. Subsequent chapters share suggested meditations and suggested flow series. The latter section lays out routines practitioners can follow (among them, the popular sun salutation and camel vinyasa), as well as series of poses that Miller devised herself that target specific conditions (including ones for anxiety and tension relief, cold prevention and improving circulation) and sports (e.g., running, swimming, tennis and rowing). By giving variations for each pose, Miller makes her book appropriate for all levels, although the positive and upbeat tone will especially comfort beginners struggling with the challenging pigeon or full shoulder-stand positions. Wacky Chicks or Womens Wisdom Perpetual Flip Calendar

Wacky Chicks: Life Lessons from Fearlessly Inappropriate and Fabulously Eccentric Women

Author: Simon Doonan

In his bestselling Wacky Chicks, irreverent social commentator and humor writer Simon Doonan introduces readers to a bracing cross section of exuberantly unconventional women: comedienne Amy Sedaris; fashion designer turned park ranger Spider Fawke; Warhol muse Brigid Berlin; Suzanne Bartsch, the woman who showed Madonna how to vogue; and many more. Distinguished primarily by their wild originality and rule-breaking chutzpah, these women defy rules, shape the cultural landscape, and enrich the world. They are about as diverse a flock as you can imagine, but all of them are Belligerent, Resilient, Uninhibited, Naughty, Creative, and Hilarious (B.R.U.N.C.H. for short). In a word, they are Wacky, and they are ready to enlighten you. A book that pays tribute to the wild and unstoppable female in each of us, Wacky Chicks is the ultimate guide to embracing your inner rebel.

Publishers Weekly

Doonan, New York Observer columnist and author of Confessions of a Window Dresser, loves wacky women, and if he ever opted for a sex change, "you bet your sweet bippy" he'd be one himself. A wacky chick (w.c.) is B.R.U.N.C.H.: "belligerent, resilient, uninhibited, naughty, creative and hilarious." She's got attitude and shows it, whether that means filling her apartment with exotic reptiles, setting up her own slashed latex garment business, collecting Chihuahua skeletons or dressing up as Satan in horns at anti-abortion rallies. True, w.c.'s have a hard time keeping jobs (which is why many turn their eccentricities into self-employment) and some "transition from wacky to wack-job" and start shooting, but there's no denying the tremendous life force these gals have. To Doonan, they epitomize feminism: "If the goal of women's liberation was to create a world where the sisters could do whatever the hell they wanted, then the wacky chick must surely be the screeching apotheosis of feminist achievement." Doonan has a gay time neologizing (e.g., "obnoxiosities," "chickorators," "fashiphanous fromage" ) his way through the life stories of some 16 wacky women in this silly but fun self-help book. His point? Support your local w.c. all you can: take her to lunch, treat her like a queen and "validate" her wackiness. "Becoming a wacky-chick hag" may even speed up "your own transformation from Nora Normal to B.R.U.N.C.H.-y broad." Agent, Tanya McKinnon. (May) Forecast: While Doonan may be seeing pink-Stila Cosmetics now offers "Wacky Chick," a new pink shade, in support of his book-his publisher seems to be seeing green. S&S plans an author tour and national author publicity, and a mod jacket will attract browsers. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Publishers Weekly

Ever heard of a fat caveman? Today's dieters should follow their ancestors' lead, proclaim the authors of this update to their bestselling original. For hundreds of thousands of years, the human diet consisted of unrefined foods that were high in fiber, low in sugar and low on the glycemic index. Eating similarly now-avoiding white flour, white potatoes, white rice, sugar, soft drinks and highly processed foods in general (the "basic principles" of a diet that's been "field-tested by the human digestive system throughout the eons")-will help people lose weight and keep it off, the authors argue. Their reasoning is sound (high blood sugar triggers the release of insulin, the "fat-storage hormone" and the "CEO of metabolism"; the less the body lives in fat storage mode, the better), and the lifestyle they propose is simple (though it goes beyond just chucking the 5-lb bag of Domino into the trash). Try eating six small meals a day, don't eat after 8 p.m.; read the labels of all breads and cereals to find the hidden sugars and stock your refrigerator with vegetables and lean meats, the authors say. In chapters that are straightforward and focused, the authors consider childhood obesity and diabetes, discuss artificial sweeteners and alcohol, offer recipes from restaurants around the country and answer FAQs from Sugar Busters everywhere. For those with the willpower to cut out the convenience foods, this will be a helpful guide to eating better. (Jan.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Complete Book of Pilates for Men: The Lifetime Plan for Strength, Power and Peak Performance

Author: Daniel Lyon

A comprehensive, take-anywhere exercise program designed to improve men's strength, flexibility, balance, and posture

Have years of office work wreaked havoc on your posture? Could your tennis or golf game use a boost? Do you appear or feel older than your age? Or do you carry yourself in a manner that expresses strength, power, and peak performance to everyone around you?

In recent years, Pilates has become a popular exercise program, especially among women. Many books on the subject show lithe female bodies stretched across their covers. Top Pilates instructor Daniel Lyon Jr. aims to break the preconception that Pilates only benefits and appeals to women. "This couldn't be further from the truth," he asserts. "Joseph Pilates was a cigar-smoking boxer, acrobat, and gymnast, and he developed his exercise program from that background for men first." Likewise, Lyon designed this book specifically with men in mind, as the number of male Pilates practitioners -- among them professional athletes, actors, businessmen, and other high-profile personalities -- has rocketed to about three million and continues to grow.

For athletes, working stiffs, and men recovering from injuries, Lyon offers the first comprehensive exercise program of its kind. He walks you through forty "traditional mat" exercises and more than sixty "reformer on the mat" exercises -- each one brilliantly illustrated -- in an inspiring self-guided program that adapts to all experience levels and requires nothing more than floor space, an exercise mat, and the desire to look and feel your best. Using the Pilates method of engaging the strongest parts of the body, or the"powerhouse" (Joseph Pilates's term for the abdominals, hips, lower back muscles, and buttocks), and integrating all other body parts from this core, Lyon's program targets trouble spots for men and helps them achieve strong, lean, masculine physiques.

The Complete Book of Pilates for Men will deliver quick and long-term results to any man who seeks optimal fitness and a competitive edge in all aspects of his life.

Publishers Weekly

Former trader turned TriBeCa Pilates instructor Lyon argues men and women are different when it comes to the mat (men have more strength; women are more flexible). Guys tend to be especially tighter in the shoulders, back, legs and hips, so he has crafted a program for them. The idea is simple enough and the information is solid. There's a quick introduction on the history and basic principles underlying Pilates, followed by a section featuring 40 exercises of "traditional Pilates mat work" and another section with 66 more advanced "reformer on the mat" exercises. Accompanied by illustrations of Lyon in action, the exercises are well organized and easy to follow. The more material readers cover, however, the less convinced they'll be of the need for a book on the subject tailored exclusively for men. While it's true that Pilates classes generally have appealed more to women, the same can surely be said for yoga, aerobics and other comparable low-impact workouts. The gender angle makes for a catchy title and a clever hook, but ultimately seems like a bit of a stretch. (Oct.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

These books offer self-guided exercises designed to increase strength and flexibility and address differing levels of physical fitness and athletic ability. Lyon, a Pilates instructor based in New York City, aims to dispel the myth that Pilates is only for women; his clear, organized text explains and illustrates 40 traditional mat exercises and 60 reformer-on-the-mat exercises for men. (Reformer refers to an apparatus commonly found in Pilates studios.) The Pilates philosophy recognizes an integral connection between the mind and the body and focuses on the strongest part of the body-the abdomen or "core" from which all movements derive. These routines, according to Lyon, are supposed to be natural for our bodies, and their practice should increase strength, coordination, and confidence. Cooley, founder of the California-based Meridian Stretching Centers, has trained professional athletes with his program of 16 "magic" stretching exercises that are linked to the body's "meridians," or energy pathways identified in traditional Chinese medicine. Unlike conventional stretching, these exercises employ resistance. A total of 64 stretch movements are presented in workouts at four different levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and assisted advanced. Each exercise is clearly explained and accompanied by photographs. However, Cooley makes fervent claims about the psychological benefits of his regimen: the Seated Lotus Opener exercise, for example, is supposed to "help to give you greater understanding and confidence, and a better sense of humor." Lyon's book, though comparatively conservative, is inspiring nonetheless and will probably find a larger audience; recommended for public and academic libraries. Larger health collections with a New Age emphasis may find room for Cooley's manual.-Deborah Anne Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll. Lib., Dunwoody Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Alcoholics Anonymous or Understanding and Managing Your Childs Food Allergies

Alcoholics Anonymous: Personal Stories

Author: Alcoholics Anonymous

It's more than a book. It's a way of life.

Alcoholics Anonymous-the Big Book-has served as a lifeline to millions worldwide.

First published in 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous sets forth cornerstone concepts of recovery from alcoholism and tells the stories of men and women who have overcome the disease.

Personal stories have been added to reflect the growing and diverse fellowship.

Key features and benefits

· the most widely used resource for millions of individuals in recovery

· contains full, original text describing AA program

· personal stories

We, of Alcoholics Anonymous, are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book. For them, we hope these pages will prove so convincing that no further authentication will be necessary. We think this account of our experiences will help everyone to better understand the alcoholic. Many do not comprehend that the alcoholic is a very sick person. And besides, we are sure that our way of living has its advantages for all.

It is important that we remain anonymous because we are too few, at present to handle the overwhelming number of personal appeals which may result from this publication. Being mostly business or professional folk, we could not well carry on our occupations in such an event. We would like it understood that our alcoholic work is an avocation.

When writing or speaking publicly about alcoholism, we urge each of our Fellowship to omit his personal name, designating himself instead as "a member of Alcoholics Anonymous."

Very earnestly we ask the pressalso, to observe this request, for otherwise we shall be greatly handicapped. We are not an organization in the conventional sense of the word. There are no fees or dues whatsoever. The only requirement for membership is an honest desire to stop drinking. We are not allied with any particular faith, sect or denomination, nor do we oppose anyone. We simply wish to be helpful to those who are afflicted.

We shall be interested to hear from those who are getting results from this book, particularly form those who have commenced work with other alcoholics. We should like to be helpful to such cases. Inquiry by scientific, medical, and religious societies will be welcomed.

Understanding and Managing Your Child's Food Allergies

Author: Scott H Sicherer

For children with food allergies, eating -- one of the basic functions of life -- can be a nightmare. Children who suffer or become dangerously ill after eating peanuts, seafood, milk, eggs, wheat, or a host of other foods require constant vigilance from caring, concerned parents, teachers, and friends.

In this empathetic and comprehensive guide, Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, a specialist in pediatric food allergies, gives parents the information they need to manage their children's health and quality of life. He describes why children develop food allergy, the symptoms of food allergy (affecting the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the respiratory system), and the role of food allergy in behavioral problems and developmental disabilities. Parents will learn how to recognize emergency situations, how to get the most out of a visit with an allergist, what allergy test results mean, and how to protect their children -- at home, at school, at summer camp, and in restaurants.

Informative, compassionate, and practical, this guide will be indispensable for parents, physicians, school nurses, teachers, and everyone else who cares for children with food allergies.

Library Journal

Barring creating their own line of allergen-free food and placing their children in a plastic bubble, what are parents to do to keep their children safe from potentially fatal reactions to food? A specialist in pediatric food allergies, Sicherer (pediatrics, Mount Sinai Sch. of Medicine; The Complete Peanut Allergy Handbook) has put together in one welcomed source the wisdom of his many years of experience and the latest research from his own and others' clinical studies. Approachable and straightforward, his book provides parents with practical advice for managing a child's environment at home, at school, or out in the world at large. In Part 2, "Diagnosing a Food Allergy," the practice of taking a detailed medical history is espoused and case studies serve to bring the issue home. An action plan for anaphylaxis, a life-threatening type of allergic reaction, as well as a chapter on food allergy resources are included. Another excellent book on this topic Lisa Cipriano Collins's Caring for Your Child with Severe Food Allergies imparts similar practical and compassionate information, but Sicherer's approach is much more research-based. Highly recommended for public and consumer health libraries. Beth Hill, Univ. of Idaho Lib., Moscow Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Fox, director of Seattle's Pediatric Therapy Clinic, offers this gentle, sports-themed book filled with 72 activities. Her easy, stimulating games encourage father-child intimacy from birth (e.g., the aptly titled "Daddy Huddle" in which the new team snuggle together) to about 18 months (e.g., "Halftime Band" involves music). Chapters are grouped by the age of the child and feature short advisory sections. Writing in an authoritative voice that will reassure new, and most likely nervous, fathers, Fox resorts to familiar sports metaphors, as when she compares learning diapering to rookie basketball: "Did your coach stick you in the middle of a game with a bunch of experienced guys and expect you to play like a pro? No [and yet] eventually you put all the pieces together and learned to play basketball." Accompanying photographs vividly demonstrate the joy of bonding. Appropriate for gifts and public libraries. Reviewer:Nicholas Greco IV, M.S., BCETS, CATSM(College of Lake County)
Description:This is a powerful, inspiring, and self-motivating book for patients with bipolar spectrum disorders and their family and friends. This is a true guide for how to live with bipolar disorder on a day-to-day basis.
Purpose:The book is designed to give readers the knowledge and expertise to recognize their own symptoms and stressors, to take control of their psychological and pharmacological treatments. Notably, this knowledge allows them to arm themselves with awareness for early intervention, thus promoting less cycling and overall well-being. The empowerment and strength of patients and their families cannot be overstated, and this book succeeds in providing the necessary tools and information for just that purpose.
Audience:Patients, family, friends, and the mental health community will be well served by this book. Interestingly, it could serve as a novel way to illustrate to psychiatry residents and graduate students the complicated nature of the disorder as well as promoting an empathic treatment stance.
Features:The book built on an empathic and realistic stance to enable patients and loved ones to recognize and understand the disorder. There are a number of great chapters covering important topics such as medication compliance, breakthrough symptoms, stress, mood, and relapse. These topics are described in detail in a non-judgmental, open way. The book stresses patient involvement and promotes patients truly being a part of the treatment team.
Assessment:This is stand-out book for patient awareness and empowerment. Itshould be required reading for patients and their families.

Library Journal

This well-written medical compendium contains over 5000 alphabetically arranged entries (with 2000 on illnesses) and 1750 illustrations (mostly line drawings, as well as photographs). The volume opens with 29 "Symptom Chart Topics," ranging from abdominal pain through weight loss. These decision trees tell the reader succinctly when to get emergency care and when to consult a doctor six months hence. Definitions include parts of the body (e.g., the spinal cord, with a line drawing of the "Communication Highway," as the book calls it), procedures (e.g., in vitro fertilization, with four detailed line drawings of the steps involved), disorders (e.g., ectropion, with a line drawing of a sagging lower eyelid), and specialties (e.g., oncologist). Selected complementary and alternative treatments are also listed (e.g., aromatherapy). It is notable, though, that there are no entries for current procedures such as proton beam therapy or sentinel lymph node biopsy. Entries range in length from two or three lines to close to five columns; they are adequately cross-referenced and include numerous See references. Appendixes include first-aid information and sample legal forms. While the Merck Manual of Medical Information: ome Edition goes more in-depth on a smaller number of topics (300), grouped together in sections and then subdivided into chapters, this American Medical Association (AMA) resource is a more encompassing dictionary-encyclopedia. Owing to its relatively modest price, reliability of source, and coverage of popular areas in medicine, it is recommended not only for public libraries and consumer health collections but also for high school libraries lacking current texts on this topic. However, libraries that already own the excellent, full-color Cornell Illustrated Emergency Medicine and First Aid Guide may wish to skip this.
