Written with a poet's grace, these daily meditations are interwoven with reference to the transforming experiences of coming out and of recovery. As the meditations foster a "daily conversation with the Spirit," they lovingly conjure the mutual trust and compassion that lead to a rich, fulfilling life.

Deadly Harvest: The Intimate Relationship Between Our Health and Our Food

Author: Geoff Bond

With a record number of overweight people and an alarming increase in degenerative diseases, many of us find ourselves turning to meds or fad diets in an efforf to drop excess pounds or recover our health. Since most drugs come with dangerous side effects, modifying our diet would seem relatively safe and simple. But what if our foods were doing more harm than good, and fad diets only made matters worse? Deadly Harvest is an important groundbreaking book that examines how the foods we eat today have little in common with the foods of our ancestors, and why this fact is so important to our health, it also offers a proven program to enhance health, combat illness, and improve longevity.

Author Geoff Bond is a nutritional anthropologist who has for years studied both foods of the past and our prehistoric eating habits. Based upon the latest scientific research and studies of primitive tribal lifestyles, Bond first explains the actual diet that our ancestors followed-a diet that was and still is in harmony with the human species. He then describes how most of the foods in today's diets disrupt our biochemistry and digestive system, leading to health disorders such as allergies, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, and more. Most important, he explains the appropriate measures we can take to avoid these diseases-and even beat them back-through healthy eating. Contrary to what many people believe, the disorders that plague our society are not inevitable, but are the unfortunate result of modern dietary choices. Deadly Harvest not only explains why these problems have arisen, but offers a blueprint for improving our diet, our health, and our qualify oflife.

About the Author:
Geoff Bond lectures extensively both in America and Europe

Library Journal

While Bond (Natural Eating: Nutritional Anthropology-Eating in Harmony with Our Genetic Programming) holds a physical science degree and completed postgraduate professional qualifications in applied sciences, his biography lists no qualifications in nutritional science. This is troubling in a book on nutritional anthropology, in which the author attempts to develop his argument for a return to a "naturally adapted feeding pattern" coined "The Savanna Model." Bond's advice to consume a diet low in animal and trans fats, to reduce salt and sugar intake, to stop smoking, and to exercise aligns with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. However, Bond also recommends avoiding many perfectly nutritious foods, including soy, dried beans, peanut butter, skim milk, raisins, oats, brown rice, and popcorn. According to the author, "nature did not design our digestive systems to cope with starches, dairy, and sugary fruits." Eliminating major food groups such as whole grains and low-fat dairy foods is not based on sound science and could lead to deficiencies in iron, B vitamins, calcium, and Vitamin D. Overall, this book intertwines sound nutritional advice with potentially harmful misinformation. Not recommended.-Robin Sabo, Central Michigan Univ. Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos or The Body Code

Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos: A Social History of the Tattoo with Gangs, Sailors and Street-Corner Punks, 1950-1965

Author: Samuel M Steward

Explore the dark subculture of 1950s tattoos!

In the early 1950s, when tattoos were the indelible mark of a lowlife, an erudite professor of English--a friend of Gertrude Stein, Thomas Mann, Andre Gide, and Thornton Wilder--abandoned his job to become a tattoo artist (and incidentally a researcher for Alfred Kinsey). Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos tells the story of his years working in a squalid arcade on Chicago's tough State Street. During that time he left his mark on a hundred thousand people, from youthful sailors who flaunted their tattoos as a rite of manhood to executives who had to hide their passion for well-ornamented flesh.

Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is anything but politically correct. The gritty, film-noir details of Skid Row life are rendered with unflinching honesty and furtive tenderness. His lascivious relish for the young sailors swaggering or staggering in for a new tattoo does not blind him to the sordidness of the world they inhabited. From studly nineteen-year-olds who traded blow jobs for tattoos to hard-bitten dykes who scared the sailors out of the shop, the clientele was seedy at best: sailors, con men, drunks, hustlers, and Hells Angels.

These days, when tattoo art is sported by millionaires and the middle class as well as by gang members and punk rockers, the sheer squalor of Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is a revelation. However much tattoo culture has changed, the advice and information is still sound:

  • how to select a good tattoo artist
  • what to expect during a tattooing session
  • how to ensure the artist uses sterile needles and other safety precautions
  • how to care for a new tattoo
  • why peopleget tattoos--25 sexual motivations for body art

More than a history of the art or a roster of famous--and infamous--tattoo customers and artists, Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is a raunchy, provocative look at a forgotten subculture.

Subtitled A social history of the tattoo with gangs, sailors, and street-corner punks, 1950-1965. Nearly 40 years ago, the author gave up his career as an English professor to become a tattoo artist. At the urging of his friend Dr. Alfred Kinsey, he kept a daily journal for many years about his experiences, from which this anecdotal analysis is derived. Annotation c. Black America Body Beautiful or Fat History

Black America, Body Beautiful: How the African American Image is Changing Fashion, Fitness, and Other Industries

Author: Eric J Bailey

Despite all the medical and media attention focused on the rate of overweight and obesity in the African American population, African American images and body types are greatly influencing changes in the fashion, fitness, advertising, television and movie industries. This is because "overweight," like beauty, can be in the eye of the beholder. Most research studies investigating attitudes about body image and body type among African Americans have shown they are more satisfied with their bodies than are their white counterparts. Most black women, for example, are of course concerned with how they look but do not judge themselves in terms of their weight and do not believe they are valued mostly on the basis of their bodies. Black teen girls most often say being thick and curvaceous with large hips and ample thighs is seen as the most desirable body shape. Thus, there appears to be a wider range of acceptable body shapes and weights, and a more flexible standard of attractiveness, among black Americans as compared to whites. And that fact is not being lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. Voluptuous supermodel Tyra Banks is just one African American who's broken the mold in that industry. The effects have been seen right down to department and local clothes stores, where lines of larger and plus size fashions are expanding, becoming more colorful and more ornate. In the fitness industry, health gurus Madonna Grimes and Billy Blanks have been revolutionizing how people get fit and how fitness needs to be redeveloped for the African American population. Advertising has taken a similar turn, not the least ofwhich has been Dove and Nike's major promotional campaigns in 2005 with plus-sized actresses. In movies and on television shows, the African American "beautiful body" image has also followed suit. In this book, Anthropologist Eric Bailey introduces and explains the self-acceptance and body image satisfaction of African Americans, and traces how that has spurred changes in industry.

Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West

Author: Peter N Stearns

A Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in History

"Stearns looks to explain why America is the fattest, and France the thinnest, nation in the West. In his view, 'dieting was ideally suited to an American need for an implicit but vigorous moral counterweight to consumer indulgence.' At the turn of the century, obesity was suddenly regarded as unhealthy and unpatriotic. Good American citizens should be fit, and a generation of fad diet experts sprung up to guide."
--Elaine Showalter,Times Literary Supplement

--The Nation

"Explores the interaction of weight-control cultures with gender, class, and ethnicity issues. A meaty study of historical facts and fears about fat."
--Booklist

The modern struggle against fat cuts deeply and pervasively into American culture, as evidenced by the compulsion to stay thin, or at least to profess a desire to become thin. Dieting, weight consciousness and widespread hostility to obesity form one of the fundamental themes of modern life in countries around the world. Yet, for example, while the French are renowned for their delight in all things gustatory, they are significantly trimmer and less diet-obsessed than Americans.

Fat History explores the meaning of fat and anti-fat in modern Western society, focusing on the uniquely moral component of dieting in America. Tracing how standards of beauty and physical morality have been radically transformed over the past century in the United States and France, Peter N. Stearns illustrates how the contemporary obsession with fat arose in tandem with the dramatic growth in consumer culture, women'sincreasing equality, and changes in women's sexual and maternal roles. Contrary to popular belief, fashion and nutrition have played only a secondary role in spurring the American aversion to fat, while the French distaste for obesity can be traced to different origins altogether.

Filled with narrative anecdotes and rooted in Stearns' trademark use of engaging original sources--from Ebony and Gourmet to The Journal of the American Medical Association and popularized accounts of French doctors--Fat History explores fat's transformation from a symbol of health and well-being to a sign of moral, psychological, and physical disorder.

Journal of American History

Provides an innovative explanation of the modern preoccupation with dieting that fundamentally revises our understanding of the timing, intensity, and significance of the modern American culture of weight loss.

Publishers Weekly

In the realm of books on America's obsession with fat, Stearns's new hypothesis is a refreshing counter to the current denunciations of the patriarchy with a broader sociological and historical approach. The author's measured, scholarly tone can be a bit dry, however. Drawing from magazine articles, advertisements and doctors' recommendations, Stearns (a history professor and dean at Carnegie Mellon University) attempts to explain why, while dieting less than Americans, the French have more success keeping their weight down. He attributes the disparity to the equating of thinness with moral rectitude in the United States, where increasing indulgence in other areas (such as sex and consumerism) has left the population with a guilt complex and a penchant for snacking. By contrast, the French aesthetic approach treats food as a culinary art, to be taken in small amounts and enjoyed for its subtle flavor: "France had no equivalents of rural Americana's pie-eating contests." While his argument is interesting, readers may wonder why Stearns does not adequately address the American perception that French thinness is the consequence of too much caffeine and nicotine. Nor does he compare the occurrence of eating disorders in the two nations, a test with real potential for bolstering his assertion that Americans view "diet more as combat than a matter of simple restraint." Illustrated. (June)

Kirkus Reviews

This leftist academic examination of our collective fascination with dieting depicts it as a manifestation of capitalist consumer culture duking it out with the secular remnants of puritanism.

Stearns, founding editor of the Journal of Social History and a historian at Carnegie Mellon University (Millennium III, Century XXI, 1996, etc.) approaches our concern over personal poundage as a construct that, exceeding the demands of fashion or good health, can be understood only in larger cultural terms. We Americans relish the consumer goods with which we surround ourselves but feel a mite guilty about indulging in them. So we have contrived a way to—literally and figuratively—have our cake and eat it too: We diet. Focusing intensely on limiting caloric intake lets us feel virtuous and self-controlled even as we ignore our profligacy as consumers. We are not all equally affected; notably, from the 1920s to the 1960s "weight morality bore disproportionately on women precisely because of their growing independence, or seeming independence, from other standards." In France, the other society considered, Stearns does not detect a view of weight loss as a moral crusade or fat as an outward sign of guilt. For Americans, rewards (a better job or social life) will come when they become thin and healthy; for the French, being thin and healthy is the reward. Interesting as the cross-cultural comparison is, one senses that its neat findings slight some untidy questions. For example, why does Stearns focus on the gender of the target of antifat comments but not on that of their source? To what extent are unattainable standards of slenderness invaluable in allowing people to devote a portion of each crowded day to self- absorption? Does that count as an expression of guilt?

Those who agree with Stearns's premise from the first page will readily accept his illustrations as proof. Others may see this as an interesting study that suggests the complexity of a phenomenon more convincingly than it accounts for it.

What People Are Saying

Spiritual Roots of Yoga: Royal Path to Freedom

Author: Ravi Ravindra

Rather than a hatha how-to guide with asanas and step-by-step instructions, The Spiritual Roots of Yoga explains yoga's origin and underlying philosophy. The book dives straight to the heart of the yogic tradition embodied in the figure of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, an understanding broadened through an examination of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra. It then provides the framework for an accessible comparison between yoga and Christian, Buddhist, and other systems of thought. The author of several acclaimed interfaith studies, Ravi Ravindra writes from a deep understanding of not only the philosophy but the context from which yoga evolved, as well as its standing within the community of religious thought and practice, offering practitioners and other spiritual pilgrims a deeper appreciation of the tradition.

Borg's Perceived Exertion and Pain Scales

Author: Gunnar Borg

Borg's Perceived Exertion and Pain Scales begins with an overview and history to introduce readers to the field of perceived exertion. The book then covers principles of scaling and applications of both the RPE and the CR10 scaling methods. This text discusses the fundamental bases of perceived exertion, presents information on uses and misuses of the scales, and provides guidance and direction on how and when to measure subjective somatic symptoms. A special appendix in the back of the book includes tear-out cards containing three RPE scales and three CR10 scales. A scale and instructions for how the scale is used are printed on each two-sided card.

Edward M. Heath

This is a new edition of a book on perceived exertion and pain scales written by the developer of the scales himself. It is a compilation of the development, proper use (including validity and reliability), and research using the Borg ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) scale and the Borg category-ratio (CR10) scale. The purpose is to present two scales: the Borg RPE scale and the Borg CR10 scale. The emphasis is on viewing humans as a psychosomatic whole and using human perception as a diagnostic instrument. In view of the common use of these scales in clinical, research, and everyday settings, the objectives of the book are certainly worthwhile. With the use of numerous investigations, and the insight only the developer of the scales can give, the author more than meets his objectives. He has written a book that truly targets a large audience that includes exercise scientists, physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, physical education teachers, exercise supervisors, and coaches and athletes. As the developer of the scales and the first author on more than 50 articles and chapters that pertain to the scales, Borg is the most credible author available to write this kind of book. This book is well presented with numerous helpful figures throughout. Two unique features add to its appeal. Gray boxes of text appear throughout the book that provide interesting stories and insights from the author. The perforated scales and instructions on thick paper located in the appendix are also useful. This book is an essential resource for anyone who regularly uses the Borg RPE or the Borg CR10 scale. The explanations of the development and the appropriateness of use give better insight into whythe scales are used and how they can be better used.

Stress Related Disorders Sourcebook or Shots in the Dark

Stress-Related Disorders Sourcebook

Author: Amy L Sutton

Nearly half of U.S. adults report concern about the stress in their lives, with work and money leading the list of major stressors. Stress is sometimes caused by traumatic events such as death, divorce, or mass disaster, but it often develops due to everyday frustrations with career, financial difficulties, technology, or caregiving. Stress impacts both physical and mental health by contributing to such problems as sleeplessness, reduced immunity, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. In severe cases, untreated or chronic stress may even lead to substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, or suicide.

Stress-Related Disorders Sourcebook, Second Edition provides information about the origins and types of stress and describes physical and mental health disorders that may develop during and after stressful situations. Readers will learn about the link between stress and chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, and digestive disorders. The Sourcebook also discusses how stress contributes to mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and addition to tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Information about trauma, loss, and grief is presented, along with comprehensive facts about stress management techniques, such as relaxation training, meditation, exercise, and anger management. Tips on helping children and teens cope with stress are also offered, along with a glossary of related terms and a directory of resources.

Savannah Schroll Guz Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information - School Library Journal

Divided into six thematic categories and 62 chapters, this excellent resource has been revised to include the field's newest data. American-centered statistics have been collected from nearly 20 government agencies to illustrate explanatory text. The issues explored include genetic predispositions to stress, exacerbating environmental factors, diverse physical consequences, and management techniques. Sutton (Fitness and Exercise Sourcebook) astutely incorporates a conceptual overview of stress and its promotion of illness. The book concludes with a ten-page list of federal and private-sector organizations supporting stress education. Although intended for professionals, it is accessible to the lay reader. Highly recommended for medical and psychiatric collections.

Shots in the Dark: The Wayward Search for an AIDS Vaccine

Author: Jon Cohen

When scientists proved in 1984 that HIV causes AIDS, a vaccine race spun into action. But the race to develop an AIDS vaccine now more closely resembles a crawl. Jon Cohen elucidates the forces that have hindered the search: unforeseen scientific obstacles, clashing personalities, the uncertain marketplace, haphazard political organization, and serious ethical dilemmas. "Richly documented" (Washington Post). "Cohen's description of events is gripping, ... but his most valuable contribution is his prescription for advancing the effort to develop a vaccine" (Scientific American).

Robert Gallo

[A]n important book not only for the now but for the future of this epidemic and those to come.

Seth Berkley

Meticulously researched, cogently argued, and highly readable...the most important AIDS book since...And the Band Played On.

Barry R. Bloom

[Cohen's] intimate knowledge of the thinking and personalities of the major players,... uniquely captures the real drama of science.

Publishers Weekly

In 1984, overzealous scientists proclaimed they would develop an AIDS vaccine in a mere two years. Now, 16 years later, researchers are still battling the bureaucracy and each other to decide which potential vaccines should be tested and who should pay for the testing. Although Cohen, a veteran science writer (who presently writes for Talk magazine) originally intended to document one year of the vaccine search effort, he quickly realized that "one year doesn't mean anything to AIDS vaccine researchers." Because of a lack of leadership, organization, funding and urgency, it may take a year for some scientists just to raise enough funding to subsidize their work. As Cohen notes, many of the major pharmaceutical companies--frightened by the liabilities and low profit margins of vaccine research--have pulled out, leaving scientists to vie for limited government support. Unfortunately, the researchers controlling the federal purse strings, though distinguished, often harbor conventional views about how to approach vaccine research. Therefore, innovative approaches, such as engineering or deleting viral proteins and genes, are often disregarded as either too elaborate or too risky to warrant funding. The competition for grants promotes rivalry among scientists, a rivalry that Clinton hoped to quell when he announced his vision of a "Manhattan Project" for AIDS in 1992. Although the project never materialized, there has been a recent increase in federal funding for AIDS research that Cohen hopes will inspire the testing of promising vaccines. An insightful glimpse of a fractured but important process, this highly readable, thorough account may engage and spur AIDS activists and scientists to form a united front against a pervasive disease. 8 pages of photos not seen by PW. First serial to The Sciences; 5-city author tour. (Jan.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

While popular fear and urgency has declined since the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the success of various treatments in improving the quality and duration of the lives of AIDS patients may only have lulled the public into a false sense of security. Already there is evidence that the virus has developed resistance to certain drugs, and in many parts of the world it still rages unchecked. Ten years ago, science reporter Cohen (Science and Talk magazines) began this book intending to document the story of the discovery of an AIDS cure. Today, his story is instead a chronicle of the failure to do so, owing to a combination of bad scientific research, haphazard leadership, and obstructive political and economic agendas. The author's exhaustive sources include scientific literature, company reports, and hundreds of personal interviews. Despite this book's harsh criticisms, Cohen's purpose is not to muckrake but to issue a wakeup call. This engaging story with a vital message is recommended for all libraries.--Gregg Sapp, SUNY at Albany Science Lib. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Booknews

Based on the complex technical, political, and ethical barriers to developing an AIDS vaccine which he chronicles, a California writer for magazine advocates a coordinated Manhattan Project- type effort by basic and applied researchers, business interests, and US government policymakers. Cohen concludes on the semi-hopeful note that, unlike the situation a decade ago, the world is now watching. Includes a glossary of medical terms. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Talk Magazine

Cohen offers an accessible history of the now fractured state of AIDS research and the latest developments.

Scientific American - Nancy Padian

Jon Cohen brilliantly describes the inextricable weave of science, politics, legalities, ethics and business that, like a dysfuctional family, seems to have repelled the very cooperation that a successful vaccine effort needs most...Cohen's description of events is gripping, even whe he layus out the intricacies of molecular genetics, but his most valuable contribution is his prescription for advancing the effort to develop a vaccine.

Wilderness 911 A Step by Step Guide for Medical Emergencies and Improvised Care in the Backcountry or The Health Professionals Guide to Dietary Supplements

Wilderness 911: A Step-by-Step Guide for Medical Emergencies and Improvised Care in the Backcountry

Author: Eric A Weiss

"Wilderness 911" takes all back country travelers from the basics of first aid to more advanced wilderness medicine with straightforward, step-by-step instructions. Readers will learn how to improvise with such items as dental floss, duct tape, honey, and plastic wrap. 6 photos, 80 illustrations.

Library Journal

Auerbach, former editor of Journal of Wilderness Medicine and author of several outdoor medicine books, has updated his classic text, first published in 1986, with instructions for handling almost any medical problem likely to arise. Divided into five sections, this book covers basic first aid, major medical emergencies, minor problems, those specific to particular environments such as high altitude or underwater settings, and miscellaneous topics like transporting the injured and performing procedures. Appendixes include medication dosages and conversion tables. Weiss, an emergency medicine physician and medical editor for Backpacker magazine, has written a compact guide for remote situations where professional medical care is not readily available, diagnosis must be rapid, and treatment may have to be improvised using whatever materials are at hand. Part 1 covers basic techniques such as CPR; Part 2, specific injuries or illnesses. For each problem Weiss lists signs and symptoms, general treatment guidelines, "when to worry" icons recommending prompt evacuation, and "backcountry tips" showing how to use what you have as makeshift medical supplies. Appendixes cover medications, evacuation of the injured, and what to include in a wilderness first-aid kit. Both physicians emphasize the need for preparation and prevention before embarking on any outdoor travel. Auerbach includes topics not covered in the shorter Weiss book, but in general they include much the same material. Both are well illustrated with excellent line drawings demonstrating techniques. The Health Professionals Guide to Dietary Supplements

Author: Shawn Talbott

This quick-glance reference helps students and health professionals educate themselves and their patients/clients about the scientific evidence for and against more than 120 popular dietary supplements. Supplements are logically grouped into 12 chapters based on their primary desired effect, such as weight loss, joint support, and sports performance enhancement. The authors give each supplement a one-to-five-star rating based on the level of scientific substantiation for each of its major claimed effects. The book highlights crucial safety issues regarding each supplement and sets forth recommended dosages for particular effects. A quick-reference appendix lists all the supplements alphabetically with their star ratings.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Paul R Hutson, Pharm.D., M.S.(University of Wisconsin)
Description:This is an up-to-date summary and assessment of clinical studies of dietary supplements. Although the list of supplements is not exhaustive, the authors succeed in addressing those that are both most likely to have therapeutic benefit and to be accessible to most patients. The book is divided into rational groupings of supplements as chapters (e.g., "Heart Health Supplements") that contain short monographs of individual supplements. These monographs include a short overview, a summary of the scientific support for common applications, safety, and common doses. Each monograph begins with a qualitative rating of the quality of the evidence for the applications presented, and ends with separate clinical trial references and in some cases suggestions for additional reading.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a synopsis of clinical studies of the more commonly used dietary supplements. The stated goal is to enable healthcare professionals to converse with patients or clients about the clinical evidence supporting or refuting the use of single dietary supplements. In reviewing the more than 120 supplements, the authors provide some discrimination in identifying applications of supplements that do not appear at this time to have strong merit. A strength of the book is the reference of foreign studies (e.g., German or Chinese) for supplements that do not yet have a clinical trial record in the English literature.
Audience:Although the book is intended as a tool for healthcare professionals to improve their appreciation of the peer-reviewed clinical researchliterature on dietary supplements, in fact, it appears most helpful for nutritionists, sports trainers, and nurses. Inadequate evaluation is provided for pharmacists to weigh the merits of specific combinations or criteria for product selection. Physicians are provided with little if any guidance on the added benefit of supplements with respect to prescribed medications, nor are they given specific monitoring or counseling guidelines.
Features:The scope of dietary supplements addressed is very practical. Coverage of the various uses of supplements is also generally complete, with qualitative assessments of the relative merits of the supplement in the monograph introduction and text. The text is not data-rich, with numbers found almost exclusively in the presentation of doses. There are no tables comparing the effects of similar or complementary therapies to obtain a quantitative understanding of the likely treatment effect. The authors reflect the level of scientific evidence with their overall ranking for various applications. Information that is not consistently presented that would be helpful in patient counseling includes laboratory and clinical monitoring criteria and time points for assessing benefit and/or toxicity of the supplement, particularly if combined with prescription drugs.
Assessment:This is an excellent source of summaries of clinical trials of single-agent dietary supplements in a host of applications. It provides the motivated practitioner with current citations of relevant clinical trials that can be consulted if additional details or information is needed. Other resources may be more helpful, depending on the information required. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database (Pharmacist's Letter, 2006) also provides grouping of supplements by indication, and an index of the known ingredients of combination products. Monographs available in the online version address the relative merits of supplements for various applications. However, this guide is a good value and a very helpful resource for many healthcare professionals who are seeking a readable, organized summary of the utility, common doses, and safety issues associated with common dietary supplements.

Yesterdays Tomorrow or Healing Sun

Yesterday's Tomorrow: Recovery Meditations for Hard Cases

Author: Barry B Longyear

At last, a meditation book that shows why and, more importantly, how recovery works written in no-nonsense language by a "hard case" who's been there -- and been there, and been there.

Barry L. has been clean and sober for more than 14 years, but there was a time when his multiple trips through relapse, detox, and treatment made sobriety seem an impossibility. Here is blunt, bare-knuckle writing that tells it like it is.

Know a few hard cases who just don't seem to get the program? They'll benefit from this book.

The Breast Cancer Book: What You Need to Know to Make Informed Decisions (Yale University Press Health and Wellnes Series)

Author: Ruth H Grobstein

A diagnosis of breast cancer is among the most frightening moments in a person’s life—so frightening that even to formulate questions for the doctor may seem impossible. This helpful book is written as a guide for women and men facing breast cancer and for their caring families and friends. It is also written for women who have not been diagnosed with breast cancer but are concerned that they may be.
Drawing on her many years of experience with breast cancer patients, Dr. Ruth H. Grobstein provides exactly the information they want and need in order to make the best health decisions. Her jargon-free book deals with general issues of interest to all women—mammography, hormone replacement therapy, risk factors for breast cancer, and more—as well as the numerous issues that patients diagnosed with breast cancer confront. Her book will be an indispensable companion, providing reliable information for patients on the journey through a sometimes confusing and impersonal medical system.

Library Journal

Breast cancer remains a hot topic, with computer-aided screening and aromatase inhibitors making news. Yet women face the same challenges when confronted with a positive diagnosis: what do they need to know, and what decisions do they need to make? Grobstein (founding director, Ida M. and Cecil H. Green Cancer Ctr., CA) tries to make those choices less daunting by providing a detailed approach to treatment options, with sidebars and lists of things to "Remember." Recent books have taken patients through the process and beyond (e.g., Carolyn M. Kaelin's Living Through Breast Cancer), but Grobstein's work, part of Yale's prestigious "Health & Wellness" series, limits itself to immediate treatment and a brief transition period. The highlight, which will distinguish the book from its peers, is Grobstein's "Decision Trees": similar to genealogy charts, these illustrations depict the various processes of the breast cancer experience, breaking them down to their component parts. Most women will find them exceedingly valuable in figuring out their next move. Featured throughout, these trees are also reproduced on perforated pages at the end of the text for personal use. Librarians, take heed. This reasonably priced, informative text is highly recommended for patient health collections. • Jnana Yoga or The Psychology of Eating and Drinking

    Jnana-Yoga

    Author: Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, India's first spiritual and cultural ambassador to the West, came to represent the religions of India at the World Parliament of Religions, held at Chicago in connection with the World's Fair (Columbian Exposition) of 1893. His message of the unity of humankind and harmony of religions was embraced by the public and press of the time as representing the essence of the Parliament. The Swami wished to create a bridge between the East and the West by bringing to America the gift of India's ancient spirituality, in exchange for the scientific and industrial outlook of the West. After four years of traveling and teaching in America and Europe, the Swami returned to India, where he is revered as a "Patriot Saint." The government of India has declared his birthday a national holiday. In 1976 on the occasion of the American Bicentennial, Swami Vivekananda was honored by the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery as one who came to America from abroad during the past 200 years and made a significant impact on its spiritual development.

Upon his return to India, Swami Vivekananda founded The Ramakrishna Order of India in the name of his teacher, Sri Ramakrishna, who is regarded as the Prophet of Harmony of Religions. The Order is the pre-eminent religious organization of modern India. More than 1000 monks of the Order serve throughout the world. While in the West the work is mainly in the form of conducting worship, teaching, writing and lecturing, in India the Order is widely known for its vast charitable activities -- running hospitals and schools, rural uplift, and extensive relief work in times of emergency. The Swamis of the Order work tirelessly in the spirit of "Service of God in Man," regarding the service of all people as a veritable form of worship.

The Centers of the Order in America, often referred to by such names as Ramakrishna or Vivekananda Centers, or Vedanta Societies, were first organized by Swami Vivekananda for the propagation of the Swami's teachings. Today there are Centers in many of America's major cities, including New York, Boston, Providence, Chicago, St. Louis, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Berkeley, Sacramento, and Hollywood. Because of their belief in the underlying truth of all religions, the Centers of the Ramakrishna Order are at the forefront of the Interfaith Movement. (Publisher's comments written by Swami Adiswarananda, Spiritual Leader, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York).

    What People Are Saying

    William James
The man [Vivekananda] is simply a wonder for oratorical power....the Swami is an honor to humanity.

    Jawaharlal Nehru
His whole life and teaching inspired my generation......he brought his great spirituality to bear upon his patriotism and thus his message was not confined to India only, but was for the whole world. I pay my homage to his memory.

    Mahatma Gandhi
My homage and respect to the very revered memory of Swami Vivekananda..after having gone through [his works], the love that I had for my country became a thousandfold.

    S Radhakrishnan
This book brings together the main teachings of Swami Vivekananda in an easily accessible and readable form. I hope that in these days of uncertainty and confusion of mind Vivekananda's teachings may prove an enlightenment to many troubled souls.
    — (S. Radhakrishnan, author, philosopher, and former Vice-president of the Indian Republic)

    Chistopher Isherwood
[Vivekananda is] one of the very greatest historical figures that India has ever produced. When one sees the full range of his mind, one is astounded.

    F. S.C. Northrop
To convey Hindu meanings in English words is exceedingly difficult. The difficulty arises from the fact that the reader inevitably reads modern western, rather than ancient Hindu, meanings into the English words. The problem of any expositor or translator, therefore, is that of so wording the English translation of the Hindu doctrines that the Western philosophical or psychological meanings of the English words will not be introduced to the reader. Especially in his exposition of Jnana-Yoga, Vivekananda showed himself to be the expert in this.

    William James
    William James

The man [Vivekananda] is simply a wonder for oratorical power . . . the Swami is an honor to humanity.

    Romain Rolland
Romain Rolland on Swami Vivekananda (from the back cover).

His words are great music, phrases in the style of Beethoven, stirring rhythms like the march of Handel choruses. I cannot touch these sayings of his, scattered as they are through the pages of books at thirty years' distance, without receiving a thrill through my body, like an electric shock. And what shocks, what transports, must have been produced when in burning words they issued from the lips of the hero!

This book brings together the main teachings of Swami Vivekananda in an easily accessible and readable form. I hope that in these days of uncertainty and confusion of mind Vivekananda's teachings may prove an enlightenment to many troubled souls.

[Vivekananda is] one of the very greatest historical figures that India has ever produced. When one sees the full range of his mind, one is astounded.

His whole life and teaching inspired my generation . . . . he brought his great spirituality to bear upon his patriotism and thus his message was not confined to India only, but was for the whole world. I pay my homage to his memory.

My homage and respect to the very revered memory of Swami Vivekananda . . . after having gone through [his works], the love that I had for my country became a thousandfold.

The Psychology of Eating and Drinking

      Author: Alexandra Logu

Our fascination with eating and drinking behaviors and their causes has resulted in a huge industry of food-related pop science. Every bookstore, every magazine stand, every grocery store checkout counter is filled with publications about how to get your child to eat vegetables, how to tell if someone has an eating disorder or, most commonly, how to lose weight. But the degree to which any of these is based on scientific research is very limited. In contrast to the literature for the general reader, the scientific research on eating and drinking behaviors is usually too technical for the general reader. The Psychology of Eating and Drinking is a unique volume; a textbook that can be comprehended by the general educated reader. Just as in her past editions of this book, Alexandra Logue grounds her investigation into the complex interactions between our physiology, our surroundings, and our eating and drinking habits in laboratory research and up-to-date scientific information. The chapters move from the general---hunger and thirst, taste and smell, and eating behaviors---to the more specialized---overeating and overdrinking, anorexia and bulimia, and alcohol use. In each case, Logue provides a brief synopsis of the most historically influential scientific research and then relates this history to the most up to date advances. This method provides the reader with a general introduction to the physiology of sensations related to eating and drinking and how these sensations are influenced by the individual's social surroundings. The Psychology of Eating and Drinking provides the general reader and student with a biological and psychological framework to understand hisor her eating behaviors.

Coping with a Picky Eater or Enigma of Health

Coping with a Picky Eater: A Guide for the Perplexed Parent

    Author: William G Wilkoff

    End the Food Wars!

Do you feel as if you're running a restaurant instead of cooking dinner for a family? Are you tired of dumping plates of uneaten food in the garbage? Then you must read Coping with a Picky Eater. This fresh, practical, and realistic guide explains to parents how they can avoid mealtime battles with kids aged one to six years, using sensible strategies that will establish a lifetime of healthful eating habits.

With cases ranging from the toddler who eats only peanut butter and jelly on white bread to the six-year-old who insists on scrambled eggs and cheese at every meal, pediatrician William G. Wilkoff, M.D., has been counseling picky eaters and their concerned parents for more than twenty years. Debunking common myths and soothing parents' fears, Dr. Wilkoff covers such practical matters as:

    • providing appropriate nutritional guidelines for youngsters one to six, including serving sizes;
    • dealing with nutritional saboteurs -- from indulgent grandparents to accommodating (or impatient) caregivers;
    • resisting the temptation to "whip up" special orders that disrupt family meals and give the picky eater control over the family dynamic.

Dr. Wilkoff shows that by establishing reasonable rules when children are young, parents can not only eliminate daily fights about food, but also reduce the possibility of eating disorders later in life.

Enigma of Health: The Art of Healing in a Scientific Age

    Author: Hans Georg Gadamer

“This is an extraordinarily thoughtful and insightful analysis of major contemporary problems dealing with the physician-patient relationship and the attitudes of society toward health, illness, and death. I know of no work that attempts to do what Gadamer does here. The book will serve educators in the humanities—especially those in philosophy, psychology, and sociology—as well as many persons in the health professions. I would be pleased if its message were absorbed by every student and practitioner of medicine.”—Victor Vaughan, M.D., Stanford University School of Medicine

German philosopher Gadamer explores the ethical and humanist issues raised by the technological successes of modern medicine. He argues that medicine is not only a science but an art of hermeneutic relevance requiring practical judgment and personal interpretation. First published as Uber die Verborgenheit der Gesundheit in 1993. Paper edition (unseen), $14.95. No bibliography. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
